Jessica Pegula Reigns Supreme Over Coco Gauff and Others in Andy Roddick’s Eyes Following Her Dominant Win in Toronto

Fortune can change real quick, isn’t it? Ask Jessica Pegula, who entered the US Open swing on the back of a disappointing Paris Olympics campaign. However, her fate changed quickly as Pegula went on to win the Canadian Open, defeating her compatriot, Amanda Anisimova, in a thrilling summit clash. With the US Open coming up later this month, the American star has struck form at the right time, and her compatriot, Andy Roddick, feels that she can win the Summer Slam.
A player completes a Summer Slam by winning the two American hard-court swing Masters tournaments along with the US Open. Interestingly, only three players have been successful in achieving this feat in the Open Era – Pat Rafter, Andy Roddick, and Rafael Nadal. With form on Pegula’s side, Roddick feels that she has a great opportunity to join the exclusive club.
Earlier today, a new episode of Roddick’s podcast, ‘Served with Andy Roddick‘ dropped, where he explained why Pegula has a better chance than the likes of Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek of winning the Summer Slam. He revealed, “She got a better opportunity than anyone else right now. It is little bit easier now than it used to be, just because you used to not have byes. So you were playing Sunday then Tuesday evening, travel Monday…She can win a couple more matches in Cincy, she’s in great preparation for New York.”

After a hectic Canadian Open campaign, Pegula has received a bye in the opening round in Cincinnati. As a result, she’ll have plenty of time to rejuvenate and keep her hopes of winning the Summer Slam alive. This wasn’t the case until a few years ago when the seeded players had to play the first-round matches here.
Meanwhile, Pegula is on cloud nine after defending her title in Canada. Following her victory, she left her grandparents emotional with a touching message.
Jessica Pegula dedicates Canadian Open wins to her grandparents
The American star showed grit and determination to dominate her opponents in Toronto and win the Canadian Open. It was back-to-back titles for her here and she reminisced about her roots and paid an ode to her grandparents.
During the on-court interview after her victory, Pegula revealed, “If I’m saying that right, I think my grandma is from Montreal, and my grandpa is from Toronto, right? Yeah? Okay, so I have one in each city, so that’s one for each of you guys.” A loud cheer followed and her grandparents got emotional.
Further, she also thanked her family for cheering her during the match, saying, “Toronto, it’s nice, it’s so close to Buffalo, I had a lot of friends, family, and my grandparents, my husband was able to come today. That’s cool, I don’t really get that at a lot of tournaments.”
Pegula will begin her Cincinnati campaign tomorrow in the second round. Can she win the Summer Slam this year? Let us know your views in the comments below.
