Key TakeawaysCoca-Cola issued a voluntary recall of over 13,000 cases of Minute Maid Zero Sugar Lemonade after discovering they contained regular lemonade with high sugar content. The mislabeled products were distributed in Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio.No illnesses were reported, but mislabeled products can be risky, especially for people who need to avoid or limit sugar intake.
Over 13,000 cases of Coca-Cola’s Minute Maid Zero Sugar Lemonade have been recalled because they actually contained the regular lemonade formula with 40 grams of sugar in each can.In September, Coca-Cola initiated the recall for the products, which were shipped to stores in Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classified the recall as Class II, which is defined as “a situation in which use of, or exposure to, a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”According to the FDA, no illnesses related to the mislabeled drinks have been reported. While labeling errors might not seem as serious as food contamination or spoilage, they can be dangerous, especially if the error involves an allergen. In the case of Minute Maid lemonade, a beverage that’s mistakenly labeled as “zero sugar” could spell trouble for people who need to limit or avoid sugar intake. For example, people with diabetes may reach for sugar-free beverages, but accidentally getting one that is full of sugar could have a direct effect on their blood sugar.According to the product nutrition labels on Coca-Cola Direct, Zero Sugar Minute Maid Lemonade has 5 calories, 2 grams of carbs, and 0g of sugar per can, whereas a regular Minute Maid Lemonade contains 150 calories, 43.5g of carbs, and 40.5g of sugar per can.The recalled products were packaged in cartons of 12 cans and had the following codes printed on the carton and the bottom of the cans:FEB1725CNAFEB1725CNBAccording to Coca-Cola, “no impacted product remains in the market. All recall activities in those markets are complete.” If you have any drinks that were part of the recall, you can either throw them out or return them to the store for a refund.
What This Means For YouIf you regularly buy Minute Maid Zero Sugar Lemonade, check for the recalled products by looking for specific codes on the cans and cartons. If you have any of the affected items, you may return them for a refund.
