Brian Stogner to step down as president of Rochester Christian University
Brian Stogner, president of Rochester Christian University in Rochester Hills, Mich., will step down in December after nearly nine years at the helm.
For more than 25 years, the psychology professor has served in various roles at the 1,250-student university, which is associated with Churches of Christ.
Stogner’s resignation will take effect Dec. 31, after which he will become president of the Michigan School of Psychology in Farmington Hills.
“I love this community and our mission to prepare students for service in God’s world,” Stogner said in a letter to alumni. “This decision was difficult for me, but I believe it is time for new leadership to take the institution to the next level.
“I strongly believe RCU has great potential, perhaps more now than ever in its history. I intend to continue supporting RCU financially and to provide any advice and counsel related to strategic planning, new programs, and other matters that will be helpful for the institution.”

During Stogner’s time as president since 2016, Rochester Christian developed its nursing school; established new majors, degrees and athletic teams; built a new gym, the Garth Pleasant Arena; and acquired the nearby Rochester Church of Christ building.
“His vision and unwavering commitment have guided the institution through a number of significant challenges over the years,” Joe Alexander, Rochester Christian’s board chair, said of Stogner.
Among those challenges, the university recently changed its name from Rochester University after a legal dispute brought by the University of Rochester in New York state.
Rochester Christian says it will soon share plans for an interim and long-term replacement for the outgoing president.
Another university associated with Churches of Christ — York University in Nebraska — is also going through a presidential transition after four-year president Sam Smith left in July to head Mount Dora Christian Academy in Florida.
