Former Jamestown golfer third after State Open first round

Former Jamestown High golfer Bobby Dudeck III held third place Friday after the State Open of Virginia first round at Independence Golf Club in Midlothian.
Dudeck, who received All-Big South honorable mention last season as a Radford senior, shot a 4-under-par 67. Logan Reilly of Lovettsville, who won the VSGA Amateur Championship via match play less than three weeks ago, held the lead in this 54-hole stroke-play tourney at 6 under. He has committed to NCAA champion Auburn.
Sam Beach, who played for the Richmond Spiders through 2011, was second at 5 under.
Former Jamestown High star Ryan Leach, headed to play for West Virginia, was tied for 17th at 1 under. So was Poquoson’s Josh Brown. A large group at even-par 71, tied for 25th, included Cypress Creek pro Carey Hodsden, Great Bridge High star Trey Marrion, who has committed to Illinois, Virginia Beach National pro Rupe Taylor and Viniterra’s Josh Speight, who competed in this year’s major PGA Championship.
The top 60 and ties among 144 players after Saturday’s round will advance to Sunday’s final round.
