Warwick students return to class with some new changes
WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — More than 8,000 students in Warwick have their first day of school on Thursday and can expect some changes for the new school year.
Superintendent Lynn Dambruch said outdoor learning spaces are being built at seven schools.
"The children will have experiences, be able to discover and explore outdoor learning and it will teach children that learning doesn't just take place within four walls," Dambruch said.
One big change in the new school year includes Holliman Elementary School moving into the Gorton Administration Building as the school undergoes an HVAC project this year.
When do RI, Mass. students go back to school?
"The children are leaving Holliman and attending school at the administration building. We moved all the materials and furniture, and we're ready to go," said Dambruch, "I warmly welcome the students and families."
A brand-new curriculum has also been written by teachers and their curriculum director. There will be numerous new initiatives implemented this year to increase student success.
"We ordered high-quality materials aligned with the Common Core standards to go and support the curriculum," Dambruch explained.

"We also want to transfer from traditional learning to modern learning. So, when I went to school, we sat in rows and you know, we just worked by ourselves," Dambruch continued. "Now, we want to put children in groups, have them discuss, have them problem solve, and share thoughts. So we're moving to that."
She noted she hopes to have that initiative fully implemented in the next two years.
"It's partly been implemented, but not fully. We're moving forward with that. I'd like to see that in every classroom," she said. "We're not there yet, but I hope within two years we'll be there."
